Moodie to serve Bench-Bar Committee
Melissa Moodie in the Hutchinson office has been selected to serve on the Bench-Bar Committee of the U.S. District Court of Kansas for a three-year term beginning in January 2012. This committee meets approximately two times annually and engages in work of significant importance to the court, particularly with regard to the local rules and the relationship between the bar and the court.
The Bench-Bar Committee serves general advisory and liaison roles with respect to the operation of the court and will, among other things: (1) provide a forum for the continuous study of the operating procedures of the court; (2) serve as liaison among the court, its bar, and the public; (3) study, consider, and recommend the adoption, amendment, or rescission of the Rules of Practice of the court; (4) study and promote a continuing legal education program; and (5) make studies and render reports and recommendations as the court directs.

Greg Meredith Joins Firm
Gregory Meredith has joined the firm and is located in the Hutchinson office. Greg graduated with honors from Washburn University School of Law and received his undergraduate degree from Pittsburg State University (Pittsburg, KS). His prior experience includes serving as a Reno County Assistant Attorney, and as General Counsel for a publicly-traded company. He has spent the past 17 years working in the receivables management and collection industry, with a focus on consumer protection and privacy laws.

September 8 and 9, Carol Smith attended the 2011 Pearlman Gathering in Seattle, Washington, where she moderated a panel of industry experts on negotiation strategies for mitigating the completion loss. Pearlman is a surety/construction focused educational organization founded and managed by company side surety professionals. In conjunction with the gathering, Bruce Waugh, along with Patrick O’Connor of Faegre & Benson in Minneapolis, Minnesota, created form documents related to securing the surety’s indemnity rights, which were presented to the Pearlman membership for their use.
2011 Light the Night Walk
For the second year in a row, John Hampton of the Lawrence office served as the local chairperson for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk in Lawrence, Kansas. Light the Night Walks are evening events which took place across the country and which paid tribute to those battling blood cancers, honored those whom we have lost to cancer, and raised money for cancer research.
The 2010 event was a huge success with over $77,000.00 raised for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The previous record for the Lawrence event had been $47,000.00. This year’s fundraising campaign culminated with an event on September 24, 2011. Maureen Redeker Joins Firm
Maureen Redeker has joined the firm and is located in the Manhattan office, along with Lisa Ward. Maureen graduated summa cum laude from The Florida State University College of Law and from Maryville University of St. Louis. Her prior experience includes a judicial clerkship with The Honorable Judge John Lungstrum in the U.S. District Court of Kansas and working for a large, international law firm in Kansas City, Missouri. She will be practicing primarily in the areas of business and employment law, estate planning and probate, and bankruptcy. Maureen is a member of the Junior League of the Flint Hills and of the 2011-2012 Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program. She resides in Manhattan with her husband, Travis, who works at Kansas State University.

Carol Smith Contributes to ABA Publication
Carol Smith of the Overland Park office was a contributor/editor of the surety portion of the article Recent Developments in Fidelity and Surety Law in the Winter/2011 issue (46/2) of the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Law Journal. Carol is a vice-chair of the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section’s Fidelity & Surety Law Committee.

Symphony in the Flint Hills
Bruce Waugh of the Overland Park office was the 2010-2011 Board Chair of the Symphony in the Flint Hills and introduced Governor Sam Brownback at the Symphony held on June 11 in Volland, Kansas. The theme for this year’s Symphony was Freedom’s Frontier in the Flint Hills. Over 7000 people attended the event. The mission of the Symphony in the Flint Hills is to heighten appreciation and knowledge of the tallgrass prairie.
